I have always enjoyed showing new players the basics of how to play darts. When I was new I was fortunate to have friends willing to take the time to show me the game, so it's nice to pass it along. That has made me interested in finding some good material for new players.
Of course, a new player could not go wrong purchasing some of the helpful books that are available. George Silberzahn's How to Master The Sport of Darts offers a serious and comprehensive approach. Those who enjoy a dose of humor with their instruction may benefit from Master Lo's advice in Mike Orav's well-illustrated classic Become Your Darts. Other popular books include Fundartmentals by Frank Pratt (catchy title!) and A Bar Player's Guide to Winning Darts by Fred Everson. The American Dart Organization's Book of Darts also contains much useful information. I have read all of these books and would recommend them.
Of course, free online advice abounds on the rules of various games. I found a useful basic description for beginners at Wikipedia. Dartchucker also has a good beginner's description of '01 games and the American cricket game.
Above all, darts should be enjoyable. Learning the game and meeting the people then becomes fun. Feel free to share any good information you have found for beginners by commenting. My next report will be after our first gathering at the Ale n'Wich. Until then, good darts!

One great free web site is DartBase at http://www.dartbase.com/
The two "must sees" are the Mental Game section and the 2 & 3 dart shoot-outs where common finishing mistakes are explained. See the guided tour at top right on the home page.
I will give that one a look Tommo.
