Dart For Dreams Tournament Initial Report

Pictured above is Gary from the Greater Trenton English Dart League (GTEDL), which sponsored the Dart for Dreams Charity Dart Tournament at the VFW Hall in Hamilton, NJ yesterday. The proceeds go to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation. Dart players paid $5 admission at the door, and then paid $5 to throw 100 darts. Each hour between 2 and 8 p.m., the high score winner received a cash prize. I arrived around 3 p.m. with my friend Greg from Freehold.

I used to play in the GTEDL when I worked in Trenton, and I had fun catching up with some of my old league team mates from Buddy's Tavern. Some of my Philly Darts friends attended, including Russ and Cathy Jazz. The boards were constantly full of dart players throwing for prizes. They also had a table full of raffle prizes. George Silzerbahn was there and autographed several copies of his book on how to master the sport of darts, which were included in the raffle.

The fun thing about the format is that your final score gives you a point-per-dart rating. For instance, my final score throwing 100 darts ended up being a little over 2,600 points. Thus, my point-per-dart average was about 26, which translates into an average score per 3-dart turn of about 78. I certainly need to bump that up before the PDC US Open, where guys will be shooting over 90 per turn! Gary reported that my score was luckily good enough to win the 5 p.m. purse, but was nowhere near the overall high. When I left around 5:30 p.m., Rob Bodolowski from Trenton had a score over 2900, which he tallied during the first hour. Last year Jimmy Widmayer reportedly won the overall competition with a score of appx. 3200, which translates into a respectable 96 points per turn.

Gary mentioned that the Tournament raised $6,000.00 last year for Make A Wish and it looked like they would exceed that number this year. I will give a final report when all the results are clear. Congratulations to Gary and the GTEDL for doing a great job raising funds for this worthy cause, and I look forward to attending again next year!
